van Gaal’s five options to get United scoring

With Wayne Rooney struggling to perform and Manchester United on a three game goal drought, is it time for Louis van Gaal to look at someone different up front? Sold Javier Hernandez has six goals in four games for Bayer Leverkusen, while Robin van Persie is beginning to find his feet in Turkey, scoring an excellent free kick for Fenerbahce recently.

But with those two gone, United have five options to help end the drought.

Anthony Martial –

Shunted out wide after a great start against Liverpool and Southampton playing up front. He has had a positive influence on games, scoring the crucial equaliser in Moscow. But, centrally is where the French teenager has had the biggest effect.

James Wilson –

Prolific at Youth level, he has a poachers instinct, but has not been given a good enough chance to perform in the first team as yet.

Marouane Fellaini –

The Belgian offers something different to what the other United attackers, height. The opportunity to go more direct up to Fellaini is a tactic that rescued a point at West Ham and West Brom last season. Although it is not the answer from the start of games, it could prove a good option from the bench when chasing a goal.

New signing –

January wasn’t a time United did business last season. But this year, the lack of goals may mean van Gaal invests in a new striker. Antoine Greizmann or Harry Kane, who has now scored four times in just two games could be just what the club need to kickstart a title challenge.

Stick with Rooney –

Despite the United captain being the clubs top scorer this season, the negativity surrounding his performances has led to many thinking his days as a top striker are over.

Personally I think Rooney has lost the yard of pace needed to be a top number 9, but van Gaal’s desire to keep playing his captain means he will be always in the starting 11. Saying that he ‘gives more than goals’.

With the quotes by the manager, confirming he will remain in the team, the best option at this stage in his career may prove a deeper role at number 10 in behind a quicker striker like Martial.
