The England international was wearing a brace on his right leg as he recovers from a long-term injury which he picked up on international duty.

Manchester United welcomed back both Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Ander Herrera from suspension. But Paul Pogba was only fit enough for the bench on his return from injury.

Marcus Rashford (above) started on the left, with Jesse Lingard on the right and Ibrahimovic up front. Daley Blind came in at left back, with Ashley Young moving to right back as Antonio Valencia was rested.

Everton scored first when Phil Jagielka poked home after Ashley Williams’ flick on from a corner.

United then hit the bar twice, first from Herrera who was following up Daley Blind’s brilliant free kick, which was well saved by Joel Robles and then from half-time sub, Paul Pogba who headed against the bar. The world’s most expensive player has now hit the woodwork 9 times this season in all competitions. A figure matched by only Manchester City’s Kevin De Bruyne.

Zlatan had a goal wrongly disallowed for offside when he headed in past Robles at the back post with 20 minutes to go.

United now travel to Sunderland on Sunday (1.30pm BST), before heading to Brussels, Belgium to face Anderlecht in the Europa League Quarter Final 1st leg.

  1. I caught a glimpse of Chris smalling happily stopping for selfies. Once I saw that brace on his leg, I thought that’s him out for the season. Judging by bailly & rojo combination at the minute, he wouldn’t get in the side.

    • Yeah, bailly and rojo were brilliant again last night, especially bailly against lukaku. But with jones out as well we might struggle if one of those two get injured. Especially as Jose doesn’t seem to trust fosu-mensah.

      • My fingers are well and truly crossed both stay fit. I like fosu-mensah, I think he is a beast like Valencia. It’s a shame he doesn’t get more game time. He is better than darmian. My hope is that Jose goes and gets a quality centre half to partner bailly & ships out smalling and probably Jones.

  2. I’d agree with that, bailly should be our first choice for years now, need another CB in the summer because you can’t rely on Smalling and Jones with how many injuries they get. By the sounds of it at the moment tho Jose wants some more attacking players first. So hopefully Griezmann,
